Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has commenced his visit to Germany with meetings held in Berlin alongside German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. This marks Zelensky’s first visit to Germany since the war initiated by Russia against Ukraine, and he was warmly received by President Steinmeier at the Presidential Palace, Schloss Bellevue, in the capital city of Berlin.
After signing the guest book of the German Presidency, Zelensky began one-on-one meetings with Steinmeier. Furthermore, Zelensky also met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during his visit to Germany.
A Joint Press Conference was Held Following the Meetings
Following the meetings, a joint press conference was held. Scholz welcomed Zelensky with a military ceremony. After the one-on-one discussions and talks between the delegations, statements were made to the press.
Security Provided for Zelensky
According to news reports in the German media, Zelensky arrived in Berlin at midnight, being transported from Rome on an A319 aircraft belonging to the German Air Force. The aircraft carrying Zelensky was accompanied by two Eurofighter combat jets that took off from the Lechfeld air base in Bavaria.
The International Charlemagne Prize was Awarded to Zelensky and the Ukrainian People
The International Charlemagne Prize (Karlspreis), one of Europe’s oldest awards, was presented to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian people. This prestigious award has been given since 1950 to individuals who have contributed to the unification of Europe and the preservation and dissemination of European values, democracy, and human rights.
The award ceremony took place at Aachen City Hall, where Zelensky was presented with the award by Jürgen Linden, the Chairman of the Charlemagne Prize Commission, and Sibylle Keupen, the Mayor of Aachen.
Linden stated that the International Charlemagne Prize was awarded to Zelensky and the Ukrainian people based on their courageous fight in defense of freedom, democracy, and European values.
After receiving the International Charlemagne Prize, Zelensky expressed great honor and stated that he represented Ukrainians who fight daily for freedom and European values.
Zelensky also emphasized that every Ukrainian is a hero and deserving of this award, highlighting that the peace Ukraine desires can only be achieved through a victory in the current war.
