Major Update to Optimism’s Mainnet, Bedrock, Announced for June 6

Ethereum’s auxiliary scaling platform, Optimism, is poised for a substantial system transformation. This major upgrade, termed as Bedrock, is set to launch on June 6, signifying a landmark advancement in the platform’s journey.

Ethereum’s second-layer scaling solution, Optimism, has divulged its plans for a significant system enhancement. The comprehensive mainnet revamp, known as Bedrock, is scheduled to go live on June 6, marking a significant milestone for the platform.

The impending upgrade was a hot topic of discussion earlier this year, and as the date draws closer, Optimism Foundation took to Twitter to offer more details. Notably, the revamp will necessitate a brief period of downtime, estimated between two to four hours. During this time, platform operations such as transactions, deposits, and withdrawals will be temporarily suspended.

The Bedrock upgrade promises a myriad of improvements, with a particular emphasis on amplifying the security features and overall stability of the OP Mainnet bridge. An added advantage is the expected reduction in transaction costs, providing a more cost-efficient experience for users.

The design of Bedrock aims to replicate Ethereum’s features to the highest degree possible, thereby minimizing potential discrepancies. This approach is geared towards minimizing the risk of bugs infiltrating the system and facilitating a more conducive environment for developers within the ecosystem to make contributions.

A key aspect of Bedrock’s design philosophy is to ensure backward compatibility, preserving the functionality of pre-existing features even as new enhancements are implemented.

Upgrade guide

The Bedrock upgrade process, as outlined by Optimism, will be carried out in a series of stages on the designated day.

Initially, operations such as deposits and withdrawals on the existing network will be temporarily suspended. This pause will extend to the acceptance of transactions on the legacy sequencer.

Following this, the next step involves implementing upgrades to the Layer 1 (L1) smart contracts. Simultaneously, an irregular state transition will be conducted on the Layer 2 (L2) platform.

Upon completion of these updates, the necessary materials for operating nodes on the new network – including contract addresses, binaries, and data directories – will be distributed. This phase of the upgrade is expected to take a brief pause, with an estimated downtime of two to four hours.

Upon the conclusion of this downtime, the Bedrock sequencer will be initiated, marking a crucial step in the transition process. Subsequently, the paused operations, namely deposits, and withdrawals, will be reactivated, signaling the successful completion of the Bedrock upgrade.

The Optimism team has emphasized that maintaining backward compatibility is a fundamental design goal of this upgrade. They have also pointed out potential incompatibilities that might arise during this transition and provided workarounds for each, which will be detailed in the following sections.
